Saugeen Shores Police say they have seized nine firearms after conducting a traffic stop.
Police say on Dec. 15 around 2:17 p.m., officers responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver in the area of North Rankin Street and Turner Street.
Police were able to find the vehicle driving through a parking lot of a local business, and say they conducted a traffic stop.
Police add it was found the driver was displaying the usual signs of impairment and while the driver was being placed under arrest, a search of of the vehicle revealed a large gun cabinet and ammunition box inside the vehicle, as well as several cans of alcohol.
Several firearms were located, and police say a check on the male driver revealed he was currently on a firearms prohibition.
Police say the accused was transported to the Saugeen Shores Police Station, where he provided two samples of breath, which registered over three times the legal limit.
As a result, police say the 37-year-old man from Port Elgin was charged with operation while impaired, nine counts of possession of firearms contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and careless transportation of a firearm.
Police say the man is being held in custody for a bail hearing and the firearms have been seized. They will remain in police custody during this investigation, which is ongoing.
