Wiarton’s only gas station is closing next month.
A Suncor spokesperson confirms the Petro-Canada station on Berford Street in Wiarton will be closing in mid-December.
“As part of a regular review of the Petro-Canada network of sites, we made the business decision to close the site,” Suncor corporate communications senior advisor Leithan Slade says in an email. “We want to thank our customers and the community of Wiarton for their patronage and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The Petro-Canada closure will leave Wiarton residents without an option to fuel up in town. The closest gas station to Wiarton is in Hepworth, about a 10 minute drive.
Bayshore Broadcasting News reached out to South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Jay Kirkland for comment, but has yet to receive a response.
Wiarton Business Improvement Area Chair Jim Turner says it’s a shame Petro-Canada is leaving.
“We’ll have to see what the fallout is when they do close the doors,” Turner says.
From a tourism perspective, Wiarton is home to the Wiarton Willie Festival every February. It’s also an attractive summer spot for camping and enjoying the waterfront at Bluewater Park.
“I think it would be a huge surprise to anybody that a town the size of Wiarton doesn’t have a place to buy gas or diesel,” Turner adds.
