That one got away from the Attack.
Djibril Touré scored a pair of goals and Quentin Musty had the overtime winner, as the Sudbury Wolves rallied from two down to defeat the Owen Sound Attack 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night at the Sudbury Community Arena.
Musty and Touré were making their season debuts for Sudbury (4-2-0-0), after returning from NHL training camps with the San Jose Sharks and Ottawa Senators respectively. The pair made an immediate impact, scoring all three Wolves’ goals.
Colby Barlow and Cedrick Guindon tallied for the Attack (3-2-1-0), which lost their second straight.
Owen Sound led after the first period. Barlow opened the scoring at 11:45, taking a pass from Taos Jordan and quickly snapping a shot from inside the right circle pass the blocker of Jakub Vondras.
The Attack made it 2-0 early in the second period with a power play goal. James Petrovski dumped the puck and and Vondras went behind his net to play it, and it took and awkward bounce right out to Guindon who hit the empty net. That goal was Guindon’s first of the season.
Touré got the Wolves on the board about four minutes later. He fired a shot from the right point into heavy traffic in front and it found a way through the crowd and past George, who didn’t appear to pick up the puck. The Attack lead was cut to 2-1.
Not long after the Wolves had an opportunity to tie it. David Goyette was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked on a chance in tight. The Wolves captain went 1-on-1 with George, who flashed his glove to protect Owen Sound’s 2-1 lead.
Touré scored his second of the period with 59 seconds left in the second period. It was another point shot from the right side, this one was perfectly placed high over George’s blocker.
The Attack lost one of their defencemen prior to the midway mark of the third period. After a scrum following a whistle in the Owen Sound end, Petrovski was given a game misconduct. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the ejection, but apparently something was said and a suspension could follow.
George was the busier goaltender in the third period, as the Wolves outshot the Attack 10-6 but couldn’t find the go-ahead marker.
It didn’t take long to end it in overtime though. Goyette rushed down the right side and fired a cross-seam past that Musty was able to get a stick on just outside the blue paint, popping it past George to complete the comeback win.
Vondras made 21 saves in the win, while George stopped 28 taking the loss. The Wolves outshot the Attack 31-23 while going 0 for 2 on the power play; the Attack finished 1 for 2.
Next up for Owen Sound is a trip to Sault Ste Marie Saturday night to face the Greyhounds (5-2-0-0). Game time is 7:07 p.m., and you can catch all the action live from the GFL Memorial Gardens on Kia of Owen Sound-Terry’s Trailer Service Bear Radio.
