Saugeen Shores police have charged a 39-year-old Hamilton man in connection to some break-ins in Port Elgin.
Sgt. Andy Evans says on September 10th, police were called by a property owner who found a man at his cottages who claimed to be there on behalf of the property owner.
“So that raised some concerns of the property owner,” says Evans, explaining, “Police arrived and located the male in question.” He notes during the course of their investigation officers found the man to be in possession of property from the cottages.
The man is charged with three counts of break and enter, theft Under $5000, mischief Under $5000, and resisting arrest.
Saugeen Shores police say he was released with conditions not to be in Saugeen Shores.
Sgt. Evans says there are a few things property owners can do to deter potential break-ins and other crime.
“There’s a method out there we call crime prevention through environmental design,” says Evans.
He explains, “What that means, is you make it uncomfortable for that person to break into your house, your residence, your property, your business.”
“Certain things that people can do are motion activated lights, audible alarm systems or alarm systems or even just putting up a warming that there is an alarm there to let the person know that the place is monitored, under video surveillance or certain things that make it less inviting for a criminal when they’re looking at your residence as a target,” says Evans.
