Bruce County Warden Chris Peabody is happy to see new electric vehicle (EV) chargers now accessible in the Brockton area.
Peabody, who is also the Mayor of Brockton, and other officials gathered at the Walkerton Community Centre on Tuesday for the unveiling of one of the chargers, with two others set up at the Elmwood and Cargill Community Centres as part of the Bruce Power Net Zero and Westario Power Lead the Charge program.
“We are very happy to partner with Bruce Power and Westario Power to bring bring EV chargers to our three community centres and especially the one up at the Walkerton Arena,” says Peabody. “Parents from outside of the region can bring their kids to hockey or ball and charge up.”
At the county level, he says they are happy to support Bruce Power in its EV charger program and set up an EV network across Bruce County.
“It is great to support the tourism industry, which is so important to the peninsula as people have any range anxiety about coming up here in their EVs,” says Peabody. “Between the county and the town project, we have 10 charging stations now.”
He says these 10 charging stations help form a network across the county and as a result of a study, a number of level three charging stations are planning on being installed in various communities in the county.
Peabody says they felt the level two chargers installed at the community centres would be a good fit, as while they might not fully charge a vehicle while a child plays a sport for a couple of hours, it can help charge the car’s battery.
He says when it comes to the need for more EV chargers, he has heard from residents on the lack of charging infrastructure.
These chargers announced around the Brockton area are in addition to the two level two units announced in Hanover on Tuesday as well. These were installed at Heritage Square and at the P&H Centre.
Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson says, “by offering this service to our residents and promoting visitors to our downtown and entertainment districts, users can charge while they shop and participate in our attractions or at our P&H Centre.”
