The Owen Sound Fire Department says careless smoking was the cause of a blaze in a high rise building.
A release from the fire department says just after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, city fire and emergency services quickly responded to a working fire on the balcony of an apartment building at 305 14th Street West.
Responding first and second alarm crews contained the fire to the area of origin on the 6th floor.
The building contains 187 dwelling units and is operated by Grey County Housing.
He says all units were evacuated for about two hours.
The fire department says the cause of the fire is due to the improper extinguishment of smoking materials.
They say while the damage was contained to the unit of origin, it’s estimated at $100,000.
Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says in a statement, “If you must smoke, always ensure smoking materials are properly extinguished and ashes are stored in a non-combustible container.”
The fire department says “If a fire occurs in your apartment, immediately leave your apartment, and call 911 from a safe location. When leaving your apartment, please ensure your apartment door is closed to assist in containing the fire and protect other occupants of the building.”
