Northern Bruce Peninsula is receiving a update on the Lion’s Head Arena project this week.
Council will be receiving the update from Parks and Facilities Manager Mark Coleman, who will be detailing the project activities undertaken since June 12.
Some of these include continuing bi-weekly meetings with the prime consultant for the project Salter Pilon. Also three bids were received to bring on a construction management firm and the evaluation process is ongoing, with a following recommendation for the preferred firm to be presented at a meeting on Sept. 11.
This is the latest after council considered moving ahead with a construction management method for the design and construction of the project earlier this year.
Several renovations are planned at the arena and community centre, including creating six new dressing rooms accessible to the arena floor level, creating a new multi-purpose room suitable for community presentation and gatherings, creating a new branch library space for the Bruce County Library system, and renovating the existing washrooms/building new washrooms to improve the accessibility for people with disabilities.
The report from Coleman says the project schedule continues to be reviewed and refined but the current timeline anticipates a final design and specification development between July and December, approvals and permits occurring between October and December, and construction geared for April, 2024 to April, 2025.
“The date for breaking ground is now projected for early spring 2024 pending finalization of civil design for structural, mechanical, electrical and septic utilities and to avoid higher costs for concrete and heating during the winter months and to minimize impacts to arena operations October through March,” says the report.
Council will be considering this item during its meeting on July 24 at 1 p.m.
