The volunteer group Friends of Hibou say the area was purchased by the conservation authority in 1973. A post on their website says the prpoerty was purchased in part, with money from the City and then matched with donations.
It explains, “The city of Owen Sound donated $26,000. CFOS and the Owen Sound Sun Times were major contributors to the energy promoting donations and letting everyone know how much was still needed. Bob Knapp (current Chair of Friends of Hibou), Fred Geberdt and Mac Kirk were key players in the fundraising endeavour, visiting and sending letters to doctors, lawyers, dentists, business owners and more to raise the funds. ”
In addition to its shoreline location, Hibou has 6 kms of hikeable trails.
