Saugeen Shores is approving the modified scope of work for the second phase of the Lamont Sports Park.
Council received a report detailing the recommended elements and associated costs of the $4.2 million budget for the second phase of construction for the park during a meeting on June 12.
The budget was previously approved in December, 2022.
The two tender bids received by the closing date in May, however, were both over budget, with the lowest at $4.5 million.
To meet the approved budget, it was recommended removing a number of items, including CCTV poles and deleting the structure concrete slab for future pavilion. This would result in cost savings of $687,840.
Given the $431,000 price tag attached to the second phase washroom building and holding tank, it was also recommended the washroom facility be removed from the contract.
Council voiced their desire to have a washroom facility, as there are currently porta potties on site.
“As a fundamental service to the community that is using this place, we have got to get bathrooms out there,” says Deputy Mayor Diane Huber. “I can appreciate the value of the contracts coming in higher than what we budgeted for, but we are not putting a bathroom into a classy state of the art facility yet.”
While the removal of the softball diamond was included as a cost saving opportunity, it was not included in the recommendation.
Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt proposed keeping one of the options listed in the cost saving opportunities.
“I am asking for councils support to reinstate the masonry wall from the legacy reserve,” says Myatt.
Council approved the proposal and adopted the modified scope.
The report says it is anticipated the second phase project schedule has been impacted by four weeks as a result of tender submission results and looking into cost-saving options.
Construction is also expected to begin later this month, with major construction slated for completion by November.
