Grey County’s Director of Transportation expects construction on a roundabout at an intersection east of Hanover won’t begin until next year.
The county received funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Rural and Northern Communities Funding Stream to finance part of the $2.4-million project at Grey Roads 3 and 4.
The intersection was tabbed for a roundabout several years ago, after a review by staff found it had the highest accident history in Grey County. It currently only has stop signs on the north-south route, Grey Road 3, while traffic on Grey Road 4 passes through uncontrolled.
Direction of Transportation Pat Hoy says Grey County is still acquiring land to facilitate the project before it can move ahead.
“Although it is in the budget for 2023, there probably won’t be construction until 2024,” Hoy explains.
The county has to complete the project by October 2026 to maintain eligibility for provincial and federal grant dollars. Hoy says the county “feels like we’re pretty good” to meet the timeline.
He says there will be an extensive communications campaign and detours in place when the roundabout project at Grey Roads 3 and 4 does commence next year.
Hoy adds paved shoulders will also be constructed leading into the intersection to accommodate for future active transportation developments, as Grey Road 4 is in the county’s cycling and trails master plan.
