It looks like Georgian Bluffs and Owen Sound could be closing in on an agreement to allow township residents to keep using the city’s leaf and yard waste site.
Georgian Bluffs committee of the whole will vote on a recommendation at Wednesday’s meeting to approve spending $26,000 as a cost for the service for the rest of the year.
Township Director of Community Services Niall Lobley says the amount is based on the estimated proportional cost of the site’s operation driven by Georgian Bluffs residents.
Owen Sound City Manager Tim Simmonds confirms the $26,000 fee from Georgian Bluffs would be for the remainder of the 2023 season.
“The idea for use of the city’s yard and leaf waste compost site has been discussed by staff and we are now both taking reports to our respective (councils) for review and approval,” Simmonds says in an email.
Georgian Bluffs’ committee of the whole will review the proposed arrangement at their meeting today (Wednesday). A report will come to Owen Sound council at its May 8 meeting.
The recommendation to Georgian Bluffs committee of the whole also includes direction for staff to work with Owen Sound to develop a “proportional cost for future access for Georgian Bluffs residents.”
There’s also a couple of correspondences on the township’s meeting agenda today, urging pursuit of an agreement with Owen Sound to allow Georgian Bluffs residents to access the site.
- No Changes To Owen Sound Compost Site Hours Of Operation This Season
- Staffing Could Be Considered To Combat Non-Resident Use Of Owen Sound Compost Site
Owen Sound recently made some operational changes at the city’s leaf and yard waste site on 28th Avenue East to prevent people and businesses from outside of Owen Sound from using the city-taxpayer funded service. A security company was hired to enforce city by-laws at the facility. Some non-residents who’ve attended since it opened for the season in April have been turned away.
Last month, Owen Sound operations committee members were told Georgian Bluffs had approached the city to discuss partnership opportunities at the leaf and yard waste site.
