Grey County has approved a number of road construction projects.
Committee of the Whole agreed to award tenders to companies for work on Grey Road 7, Grey road 18, and Grey Road 28– 24th Ave.
Work on Grey Road 7 involves two sections, from about 3km south of Sideroad 16C to Sideroads 21/22B for a length of 6.6 km and Grey Road 40 to Sideroad 4 for a length of 3.8 km. This project includes 3.5 m lanes with 1.25 m paved shoulders, culvert replacements and guiderail replacement.
County staff say the road will be open to traffic with intermittent alternating lane closures. The $6.4 million of work to be done by Walker Construction Grey Bruce is anticipated to take place between May 15th and August 15th, 2023.
Working in the same time frame, Walker Construction Grey Bruce has also been awarded the $5.2 million tender for the reconstruction of Grey Road 18. That will involve the reconstruction of 8.3 km from Grey Road 11 to Grey Road 29.
County staff say, a section of Grey Road 11 from the intersection of Grey 18 to 350m north will also be included.
The work will result in 3.5m lanes with 1.25m paved shoulders, a grade raise through the Bognor Marsh Swamp to address road flooding issues, culvert and guiderail replacements, and the construction of a parking lot adjacent to the rail trail off Grey Road 18.
The road will be open to traffic with alternating lane closures except for a four-week road closure between Concession 6S and Concession 4.
Councillor Scott Greig applauded the plans to expand the paved road shoulders on the various roads, saying, “It’s certainly of high importance to the County, the expansion of our active transportation network or cycling initiatives and this is certainly front and centre on Grey Road 7– is extremely well used and Grey Road 18 is not well used right now because it’s extremely dangerous and frightening.”
Meanwhile, Cedarwell Excavating Limited will be doing about $1.04 million in work on Grey Road 28 – 24th Ave in Hanover from 14th Street to the Saugeen River bridge. A Grey County staff report says the County is covering $950,000 and the Town of Hanover is covering about 40 per cent of the total cost. The County owns the road and the Town owns the infrastructure.
The project includes the reconstruction of the roadbed, adding paved shoulders and an expanded storm sewer network.
Hanover will also be installing a new watermain to service development along the northern portion of Grey Road 28.
The staff report says an initially proposed longer portion of work on the road has been deferred for now.
That’s because of complexities in future lane configuration that will need to work with the intersection of Grey Road 4. Staff say, they want to properly investigate lane configuration to eliminate any need to reconstruct the road a second time.
