Meaford council is going to consider awarding a $1.3 million tender at its meeting today for a three-year resurfacing project.
A report is set to come to council on March 13 from Director of Financial Services and Treasurer Valerie Manning, recommending giving pre-budget approval for the granular resurfacing project and award the tender for the work to Walker Aggregates Inc.
The report says the 2023 roadways operating budget includes funding for this project, which includes the supply, delivery and application of about thee inches of granular material, consisting of 100 per cent crushed limestone to various roads throughout the municipality of Meaford between 2023 and 2025.
The granular material will be used for resurfacing and re-grading of various roadways, with the work commencing the first week of June and be completed by the end of June each year.
The report adds the municipality made a point to request the use of 100 per cent limestone gravel due to its longevity, and operational and maintenance related benefits like reduced dust.
In the four bids received for the project, they were between 13 to 62 per cent higher than the budget estimate.
“Staff believe that the main reason for the increase is the fact that the previous contract was awarded in 2020 and the original budget estimate was reflective of the market at that time,” says the report.
The 2023 draft budget for this project was amended based on the tender and is now set at $425,000. The 2024 budget will include over $446,000, and the 2025 budget will include $470,000 to cover the remainder of the costs.
Council will be considering this report during its meeting on March 13 at 1 p.m.
