The Meaford Fire Department is receiving a combination of 180 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from Enbridge Gas in an effort to improve home safety.
The municipality says the alarms were delivered through the Safe Community Project Zero, a education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, which will provide more 8,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across the province.
The municipality adds Enbridge Gas invested $250,000 this year in the campaign, and over the last 14 years, provided over 76,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.
The alarms are able to provide early warnings to help residents safely leave their house in the case of a fire or carbon monoxide exposure.
Enbridge Gas Supervisor of Operations in Owen Sound Jacquelyn Scott says, “carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ for a reason, and evidence shows that prevention saves lives. We know that the best way to avoid carbon monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and that the alarms are a critical second line of defence to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.”
Meaford Fire Chief Courtney Allen adds the donation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from Enbridge Gas is going to help a large number of families within the municipality who need these life-saving devices in their homes.
