Chapman’s Ice Cream is celebrating a very sweet win after their Premium chocolate ice cream, known as The Only Chocolate Ice Cream, came out on top in a blind taste test.
The taste test was part of the International Ice Cream Consortium, which was held in Dubai this year.
“The closest to ours, I thought, was from Sweden, from a company called SIA Glass and they make an excellent product — not as good as ours, obviously,” said company Chapman’s Ice Cream Chief Operating Officer, Ashley Chapman. “But there were some really odd ones, I would say. The chocolate ice cream that was submitted from Bolivia, for example, it almost tasted fruity, like it had almost a berry element to it. So certainly flavour profiles change country to country and region to region, but even the Bolivians gave us an excellent, excellent score.”
The success of The Only Chocolate Ice Cream on an international stage is, according to Chapman, is due to three main things: Canadian dairy, which Chapman says is the best in the world; the second would be their cocoa blend, which the company has used since their start in 1973; and lastly, the way they make their product, which Chapman says is the best way in the world.
He also says that to be ranked number one is really special.
“It’s certainly an honour. This organization that we’re a part of is called the International Ice Cream Consortium, and every year, we have a conference in a different host country. And we do a whole bunch of competitions, not just blind taste tests like this, but other ones [too].”
Those contests include best ice cream, most innovative ice cream, best technological solution, and best commercial solution.
“The amount of ingenuity in this country is truly an amazing thing. And certainly winning this award made me proud to be a Canadian, just as all of these other awards that Canadians have won for their exceptional products — it’s an honour.”
Up next for the Chapman’s Ice Cream company is to shift their focus to next year’s conference, which will include a blind taste test for strawberry ice cream.
Chapman says that next year, they’ll be releasing a line of super premium strawberry ice cream flavours, one of which will be the company’s entry into the next competition in Guatemala.
