The Wiarton Salvation Army is getting ready to launch its Christmas Kettle Campaign.
On Wednesday, they’re kicking things off with a Volunteer Appreciation Tea.
The next day is the official launch of the Christmas Campaign across Canada.
Coordinator Sheldren Guindon says they’re excited about this year’s campaign, adding “We’re just looking forward to seeing if we can help and how we can help the needs of the North and South Bruce Peninsula as well as the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.”
Guindon says that it can sometimes be tricky to help those in need, partly because they’re worried about asking for help.
“Overall, there are 2.4 million Canadians living in poverty, and I can tell you there are a lot of needs out there. Some people haven’t come forward to even receive assistance yet.”
She says that if you know someone who needs help dealing with poverty, you can offer to help drive them places, and offer to help get them in touch with the resources available.
The kettles being used for this year’s campaign not only accept cash donations, but they also accept debit and credit cards, as well as Apple Pay and other services if you want to give a quick donation.
Guindon says they’re always looking for volunteers, and if you’re interested you can sign up by calling 519-534-0353.
The Wiarton Salvation Army has also added a fun element to this year’s campaign by introducing Kenny the Wandering Kettle. If you spot Kenny in Wiarton, you’re encouraged to make your donation, snap a photo and use the hashtag #KennyTheWanderingKettle.
