The Inter Township Fire Department extinguished a blaze on Griffith Island over the weekend.
Inter Township Fire Department Chief Jeff Gautreau says they received the call of the blaze around 11 p.m. on Nov. 5.
He says as a result of the weather, they had a hard time sending firefighters and equipment to the island by boat. The fire was later extinguished around 12:30 a.m.
Gautreau says, “windy conditions on Saturday night caused the fire to spread rapidly. Our team did an amazing job working in the early morning hours to put it out.”
The extent of the damages was limited to two outbuildings and farming vehicles, which Gautreau estimates resulted in $300,000 in damages.
Gautreau says there were no injuries or fatalities, and the cause of the fire is not known at this time.
Griffith Island is home to the Griffith Island Club, a private sport shooting club in operation since 1973.
