Northern Bruce Peninsula council is looking to enter into an agreement with the county to assist with economic development.
In a council meeting set for Oct. 11, a report is going to be brought forward by CAO Peggy Van Mierlo-West, recommending council enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The report says in early 2022, Bruce County council endorsed an Economic Development Strategic Plan, and through consultation, the core principle of it would be to spend more time working with local communities.
“The County of Bruce have expressed interest to undertake a pilot project related to supporting local municipalities on economic development priorities throughout the county. This pilot would take the form of a short term relief contract, hired as part of the planning and development department that would provide coordination and assistance on key economic development projects in conjunction with specific local municipalities,” says the report.
The report adds this program would give local municipalities the support they need to take on larger scale strategic projects like economic development strategies, community improvement plan redevelopment, business retention program development, and identifying developable lands and opportunities.
Additionally, the pilot will create the temporary resources needed to specifically assist with economic development efforts by the municipality.
The MOU outlines priority projects and scope of work to be completed. If council enters into the agreement, they will also hire a regional support economic development coordinator who will support the municipality’s economic activity.
Council will make a decision at its meeting today at 1 p.m.
