South Bruce Peninsula council has awarded a contract for the Sauble Beach EMS station project.
Council approved a staff recommendation at a recent meeting to accept a bid tender of $807,418 by local contractor Allen Hastings Ltd. for the renovation work. The town plans to create an ambulance bay and staff quarters for Bruce County EMS at the Sauble Beach Medical Centre.
The town bought the Sauble Beach Medical Centre in 2021. Earlier this year, Bruce County signed a letter of intent to lease part of the building from South Bruce Peninsula for use as an ambulance bay.
Currently, Bruce County EMS operate in Sauble Beach out of a temporary station located outside the fire hall.
The town initially planned to build an EMS station as an addition onto the fire hall, but shifted to the plan to renovate the Sauble Beach Medical Centre over cost concerns.
“When we looked at this as an alternative once we purchased the property … this turned out to be a significant cost savings,” says South Bruce Peninsula CAO Bill Jones. “We’re looking at around half the value of what we were looking at for a full renovation at the other site.”
Jones told councillors the expected “move-in date” to the newly renovated space at the medical centre would be sometime early next year.
