The Rotary Club of Port Elgin is making at $16,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross in support of Ukraine.
Port Elgin Rotary Club president Jessica Carter says, they had a raffle from their Home and Food Expo in April and were able to raise over $10,000. The club matched the donation up to $5,000 and the Founder of Shu’s Humanitarian Relief Kaitlyn Shular gave an additional $1,000.
Carter says with all of the horrible things occurring overseas, they wanted to gear their raffle to support the Canadian Red Cross’s efforts in Ukraine as well as support in the country.
“The online raffle really took off, we had support from many community folks. A number of vendors even handed another cash donation to us when we were leaving the show, it was just tremendous,” says Carter.
Carter adds they wanted to make sure they had as much funds going to the Red Cross to support Ukraine as possible.
“Many rotarians have Ukrainian heritage or friends with Ukrainian heritage and I just think it is mind boggling that there is a war going on right now in our world, especially after all the stuff the world has been though the past few years,” says Carter.
The Rotary Club thanks everyone who purchased a raffle ticket.
