Collingwood’s Fire Department is promoting from within.
Fire Chief Ross Parr is retiring this summer and deputy Chief Dan Thurman will be stepping up to fill the roll.
After 12 years with the Town of Collingwood and 38 years overall in Fire Services, Chief Parr is heading into a well-deserved retirement at the end of June.
Chief Parr started with the Orillia Fire Service in 1984 and moved through the ranks and made it to Captain in Orillia, before joining Collingwood as Deputy Fire Chief in January 2009. Chief Parr was then promoted to Fire Chief January 2017.
Dan Thurman, current Deputy Fire Chief for the Town, was appointed Fire Chief by Council at a recent meeting effective July 1, 2022.
Thurman began his career as a Collingwood Volunteer Firefighter in 1994. In 2001, he began as a full-time Firefighter in Mississauga as well as continuing volunteering with the Collingwood FD. He became a full-time Firefighter with the Collingwood FD in 2002 and earned positions as Acting Captain, Captain, and Deputy Fire Chief. Prior to entering management, he also served as the Union President for 11 years. He is a certified Fire Officer NFPA Level 4, a certified Fire and Explosive Investigator and Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) for the Town of Collingwood. He has also earned his Diploma in Emergency Management through Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Chief Parr and incoming Chief Thurman will both attend Council on May 30 for recognition of Chief Parr’s retirement and formal introduction to incoming Chief Thurman.
