The Owen Sound Attack received a quick picker-upper last weekend when the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds swept their weekend doubleheader in Northern Ontario.
The Greyhounds clearly illustrated what’s required to be a first place contender in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference.
Outside of the first 6 minutes of the 2nd game, Owen Sound was overwhelmed trying to hold off a talented Greyhounds team that is extremely quick in both ends of the ice.
On the forecheck, the Soo barely let Owen Sound breath. And in those moments that Owen Sound penetrated the Greyhounds zone, it was extremely rare that there was a rebound chance, a second opportunity or sustained territorial pressure.
Now, the Sault may have been motivated for the weekend set, coming off a pair of embarrassing home ice losses to Windsor.
And yes, the Greyhounds were the more rested team heading into the doubleheader.
But……….thanks to Sault Ste Marie, Owen Sound has a very clear example of what’s required now, and going forward this year and beyond, if the Attack want to be at the top or compete with the best in the Conference.
Of course the beautiful thing about hockey is that today is another day, another game, another challenge.
All of what transpired at the GFL Memorial Gardens last weekend is mostly in the past. However, if the Attack learn and advance from those two losses at the Soo, then they’ll be in decent position for the next two teams, at Barrie tonight and at Sarnia Friday & back here against the Sting Sunday afternoon.
Both the Colts & Sting have done decently in recent games, but if the Attack upgrade their Northern weekend, they’re capable of producing better performances, better results and a better position in the OHL’s Western Conference.
