Last week, the organizers for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, which was to be in Owen Sound later this month, received an extremely generous thank you from Sportsnet delivered by Ron MacLean.
Sportsnet, through MacLean, thanked those involved in the organizing process and expressed their regret and understanding that the 2022 festival would not be conducted in the city as scheduled.
However, Sportsnet did firmly commit to being in Owen Sound in 2023 for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, which was great to hear.
Ron MacLean used an interesting allegory in this video thank you to illustrate the connection and the strength of that connection between the broadcaster and the city.
Citing the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoff series between the Leafs and Vancouver, MacLean showed a video of the double overtime series clincher by Greg Adams that eliminated the Leafs in overtime in Game 5
As Adams scores and celebrates, a crestfallen Felix Potvin falls back into the net in despair at losing,
Ron MacLean then pointed to Jamie Macoun of the Leafs who skated to the side of Potvin’s crease.
Macoun was unfazed by the Canucks wild celebration on the ice, undaunted by the ecstasy and roar of the Vancouver crowd , and certainly not distracted by the over efficient rink attendant who scampered onto the ice to remove the net from the moorings as Potvin lay there.
Jamie Macoun stood by his teammate, as Ron MacLean saw it, the same way Sportsnet intends to stand by Owen Sound for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.
