No injuries were reported in a late night fire at a seniors’ aparment building in Walkerton, Wednesday.
Bruce County says in a release, at about 11:40 p.m. January 12th, a fire was reported at 401 Cayley Street.
It’s a residential seniors’ apartment building in Walkerton, operated by Bruce County Housing Corporation.
The County says Walkerton, Mildmay and Elmwood firefighters responded and found a blaze on the second floor of the building.
Firefighters rescued several tenants trapped by smoke and contained the fire to a common area of the second floor.
A full evacuation took place of all 44 units in the building. Crews were on scene until about 4 a.m.
The County notes tenants who do not have alternative accommodation have been sheltered at a local hotel.
According to Bruce County, the building remains in the possession of local fire departments and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
The County is asking residents to avoid going to the location at this time. Tenants, family members, and supports can contact 1-800-265-3022 to inquire about further information.
Meanwhile, Bruce County is thanking the OPP, the Municipality of Brockton, the volunteer fire departments for their rescue efforts, and Sacred Heart Parish for providing a temporary relief from the cold for those on the scene.
