Environment Canada confirms it received visual reports of a water spout touching down near Port Albert during yesterday’s severe storm.
Peter Kimbell, Ontario Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada says the water spout did come ashore and there was damage in the area of Kingsbridge, but he cannot confirm the damage was the result of the water spout as of yet.
Kimbell says they have received photo evidence of a water spout and damage over in the Port Albert area, but they are unable to confirm whether the damage is related to the spout, as it may have come from a downburst.
Additionally, Kimbell says they are also unable to confirm whether a tornado did in fact touch down in the region as of yet.
Kimbell says the storm came ashore yesterday at about 4:40 p.m., and the radar imagery was supportive of a water spout and/or tornado, but it does not mean there actually was one.
He notes their colleagues from the Northern Tornadoes Project of Western University are heading to the site today and are expected to provide an update later in the day.
According to Kimbell, no classification has been given for the weather event which touched down in the Port Albert region as of yet.
“There are still some questions to be answered and we will be waiting from the report from our colleagues at the Northern Tornadoes Project to give us further details,” says Kimbell.
