The 33rd annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular is underway this weekend, with anglers from all over competing to catch the heaviest salmon or trout.
Those who do, win the top prizes including a boat, motor, downrigger and replica fish mount among other things. There are also random prize draws daily.
Last year, the popular derby was cancelled because of the pandemic. This year will be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but organizers say they’ve worked hard to make it as enjoyable as ever. They will allow a maximum of 300 people in the fish tent at one time and all must wear masks in the tent and while in lines.
In a normal year, the fish tent would be packed with hundreds of people enjoying food, drinks and live music. In the interest of safety, this year will not feature special days, entertainment, an awards ceremony or breakfasts.
Organizers say they plan to have a curbside fish and chips meals available on the Saturday nights.
The fishing derby started at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 27th and continues until noon on September 5th.
*Editor’s note: This story was updated from an earlier version to change information concerning the number of people permitted at once in the tent.
