The Walkerton hospital is receiving a new mammography machine for this fall.
A release notes the machine from GE Healthcare, features modern tech, allowing for potential program enhancements. These include a 3D anatomical view as well as the injection of x-ray dye through an IV, allowing the blood vessels to be highlighted.
The new machine will replace the current equipment, which has been in use since 2008.
The $485,000 project price point has been supported by the Walkerton & District Hospital Foundation.
Foundation Chair Mark Gaynow says the foundation is privileged to work with the local hospital to acquire the most up to date equipment to keep the Walkerton hospital current.
The new machine is expected to be installed in Sept. and be operational by early Oct. On Aug. 24, the mammography suite will be decommissioned for the construction to begin and enlarge the current space to make room for the new equipment.
While decommissioned, mammogram’s will be scheduled for patients at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre Kincardine site.
“The foundation’s significant contribution to purchase a new mammography machine will ensure that SBGHC can continue to provide this important service for the Walkerton community and surrounding area,” says SBGHC President and CEO Michael Barrett.
Over 2,000 mammogram’s have been performed annually at the Walkerton hospital, as the facility supports the Ontario Breast Screening Program and the Breast Assessment Program.
