A major announcement came down the pipe this week with Sportsnet confirming that Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will be hosted in Owen Sound on Saturday January 29th, 2022.
The annual celebration of the sport and the connection to the National Hockey League will be conducted in the city and broadcast across the country via television. In 2020, Scotiabank Hockey Day attracted 10.2 million viewers.
Some of you might remember a highly successful ” Rogers Hometown Hockey ” was broadcast from Owen Sound in the winter of 2015.
If you recall ” Hometown Hockey ” simply multiply the number of broadcast hours by 4 and the number of days involved for the festival by 2 & 1/2.
While plans aren’t concrete or official at this second, ” Scotiabank Hockey Day ” is expected to be based at Harrison Park on broadcast day but utilize all of the city facilities for Meet & Greets, hockey clinics, a gala banquet, hockey tournaments for a variety of ages and genders plus feature both a celebrity alumni game and culminate with an Attack game against the Guelph Storm.
It’s a daunting task with high expectations based on the success of other Canadian communities who have hosted ” Hockey Day in Canada ” through the years.
But I think Owen Sound is more than capable of meeting the challenge and letting the spotlight shine brightly on the city and hockey in the city, past, present and future.
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
