The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is hosing a virtual opening of its exhibition, the nature of it.
A release notes the exhibit is set for its unveiling on June 24 at 5:30 p.m., and features works by the various artists which have contributed to the gallery’s collection through the donations of several donors over the last few years.
The exhibition will feature works by Grey County Artist George McLean and will take place over Zoom. McLean will then take part in an Q&A and artist talk.
McLean was appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2020 and is considered a prominent Canadian painter and draftsman. The main subject of his art revolves around animals in the Grey County landscape, often showing predator and prey.
He has also had is work featured in exhibitions in large museums across the country and United States. As a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, he also has several of his works already part of the collection of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery.
“I congratulate the Tom Thomson Art Gallery on this new exhibition,” says Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy. “While the pandemic has presented challenges for visiting the Gallery, the staff at the TOM have risen to the challenge and found new exciting ways for us all to still enjoy our public art gallery safely from home.”
Tom Thomson Art Gallery Director and Chief Curator Aidan Ware adds it has been a year of challenges, uncertainty and resilience and it is these qualities which resonate with the works of McLean.
“The nature of it is a testament to the qualities and conditions of life, exploring what is natural and what is in our nature,” says Ware. “We can think of no better way to welcome people back to our spaces than through this inspiring curation of artworks that the Gallery has acquired over the last several years.”
The virtual event is free to attend on the gallery’s website.
