South Bruce council got an earful on the possibility of a Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) from Protect Our Waterways-No Nuclear Waste spokesperson Michelle Stein.
The repository would store used nuclear fuel near in South Bruce if the municipality was chosen as the “willing community” to host the facility.
Michelle Stein doesn’t believe the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has a viable plan to monitor the site and asks how can the NWMO say it will be safe when the organization doesn’t know how it will check for safety.
And then there is the so-called “adaptive phase management,” and according to her the NWMO “adaptive is just the propaganda term for they’re making it up as they go along.”
Stein wants the municipality to hold a referendum before any deal is closed, should South Bruce be chosen as the preferred community for the DGR.
South Bruce Mayor Bob Buckle believes the public doesn’t want an referendum yet but do want more information before making any choice one way or the other.
Stein says a community survey last September, it showed 75% wanted a referendum on the matter and 64% said they would vote “no” to a DGR.
Following the delegation, the group held a protest parade in town with vehicles decked out in yellow to show officials the apparent unwillingness of the community to host a DGR.
Meanwhile, in a release dated June 9th, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization reaffirmed its commitment to open and transparent discussion in reaction to the delegation to South Bruce by the protest group.
