Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “,….. proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.

Later this week Meghan Calhoun of the Owen Sound Aquatic Club will be departing for Germany to compete for Team Canada at the Para Swimming World Series which begins June 17th.
Calhoun is a Senior at St Mary’s High School in Owen Sound and has been swimming with the Aquatic Club for a couple of years.
The junket will have a couple of levels to proceed through.
First, she’ll have to be classified as there are many different categories for para athletes whether we’re talking about swimming here or track and field or other para olympian sports.
Along with the classification process which could open doors for Calhoun on the international stage going forward, there is also a competitive bracket where she will compete in 2 disciplines; the 200 metre backstroke and the 100 metre breaststroke.
In somewhat of a twisted irony, Meghan Calhoun won’t compete in the event she’s best at, that being the 100 metre butterfly.
Based on COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, Calhoun will swim in her two events on one day and then depart immediately
More than a year ago, Meghan Calhoun set both Provincial and National records in the pool. In the week ahead if both classification and competition go well, she may find herself looking to represent Canada at the Paralympic Games around 2024.
