Local MP Alex Ruff says the federal government has approved 789 job opportunities for those aged 15 to 30 in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
The region has been approved for about $2.5 million in federal funding for the Canada Summer Jobs program this year.
Ruff says in a statement, “The program is especially important this year following the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students and businesses.”
The program aims to help youth gain skills and experience by providing wage subsidies to employers who can then create jobs.
Ruff says, in response to the ongoing pandemic, employers now have the flexibility to hire youth to work on a full-time or part-time basis, as well as beyond the summer months with some placements extending to February 2022.
This year’s available funding also includes an increased wage subsidy of up to 75 per cent of the provincial minimum hourly wage for each employee.
Ruff notes, “Canada Summer Jobs opportunities will help youth in our community discover different careers, gain meaningful employment, and enable them to prepare for their futures financially,” he adds, “This program represents important opportunities for both students and employers across the riding.”
