Medina Spirit won the hotly contested Kentucky Derby this year coming in at 12-1 odds.
It was a great race with a terrific, almost made-for-TV storyline of a horse purchased at bargain basement prices winning the biggest race in North America for Bob Baffert, the winningest trainer in the history of the Kentucky Derby.
……But wait a minute, a post race drug test revealed that the horse tested positive for a banned substance and immediately Churchill Downs suspended the Hall of Fame trainer.
Baffert, who has been under suspicion numerous times in his career, denied all wrongdoing when the test results were announced and promised to be fully transparent with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission during their investigation.
There are many angles to the evolving story, one of which pertains to the gambling or horse wagering industry which created good news and bad news.
Luckily for fans who bet on Medina Spirit who went off at fairly long odds, they won big cash at the race, and all bets backing Medina Spirit’s win will be honored.
Here’s the bad news; if the Kentucky Derby result is altered and Medina Spirit is disqualified then the official winner of the Kentucky Derby would be Mandaloun who finished 2nd.
Mandaloun was an even longer shot to win the derby going off at 15-1 odds….BUT those who bet Mandaloun to ” Win ” will not be entitled to first place financial winnings
That doesn’t seem fair, but the bigger question of fairness lies with the validity of Medina Spirit’s Kentucky Derby win for trainer Bob Baffert.
