Kincardine is becoming the third municipality in the region to support the Green Ribbon Champion program, after Saugeen Shores and Huron Kinloss.
Kincardine Parks and Recreation Director Karen Kieffer says the program comes from the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation.
She says its a stewardship and education program that empowers shoreline residents, providing them with advice, resources and support to protect, conserve and restore Lake Huron’s beach-dune ecosystems and water quality.
Kieffer goes on to say the centre performs a one-on-one beach assessment of a residents property and then provides them with a restoration plan, educational signage and a beach care toolkit.
There is no cost to the municipality or to residents who wish to participate in this program.
Kincardine councillors liked the idea and passed the recommendation recently to support the municipality and its residents becoming involved in the program.
Besides individuals, the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation will work with cottager’s associations and public agencies to achieve their goals of environmental stewardship of the lakeshore.
