Grey County is hosting a CANWARN Severe Weather Awareness and Preparedness training webinar.
The County says the webinar features Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng who will teach you about different types of severe weather, what to watch for in the sky, how to stay safe and more.
Grey County says Cheng has worked as a forecaster at the Storm Prediction Centre in Ontario and in Quebec, and also worked at the Weather Network for eight years as a briefing meteorologist.
On its website, the County says it had record attendance at past in-person events, and this year, a virtual event will allow for even more participation.
The event will also show you how to report weather conditions on Twitter (#ONStorm).
According to the County, CANWARN started as a volunteer weather spotter program and has now evolved into an effort to raise awareness of hazardous weather and increase community preparedness.
‘CANWARN’ stands for Canadian Weather Amateur Radio Network, which started out with ham radio operators and has now grown to include citizens using other means of communication for ‘ground truthing’ which is verifying severe weather conditions from your location, and reporting that to Environment Canada to verify conditions that are being picked up by radar and satellite.
You can sign up online at Grey.ca. Advanced registration is required as space is limited to the first 500 registrants. The webinar is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (May 4)
This CANWARN Severe Weather Awareness and Preparedness Session is in partnership with the City of Owen Sound, the Town of the Blue Mountains, the Township of Georgian Bluffs, and the Municipality of Grey Highlands.
