Drivers can expect some traffic disruptions in downtown Owen Sound this week as crews are working to decommission the 10th Street Bridge detour route.
City officials advise the work is set to begin on Monday — weather permitting — and is expected to be complete by Friday, April 16.
The detour that was put in place for the 10th Street Bridge closure will be decommissioned, and traffic flow patterns downtown will be returned to the pre-construction design.
The work will include new pavement markings, the removal of temporary signage and signage on permanent poles, and traffic light timing alterations.
Several on-street parking spots will also be restored along 8th and 9th Streets East, 9th Street West, and 3rd Avenues East and West.
The city advises delays should be expected along 10th Street at the 2nd Avenue West and 3rd Avenue East intersections this week.
There will be several downtown lane closures as crews work on the changes. They are:
-9th Street from 3rd Avenue East to 3rd Avenue West
-8th Street from 3rd Avenue East to 3rd Avenue West
-3rd Avenue East from 8th Street East to 10th Street East
-2nd Avenue West from 8th Street West to 10th Street West
-3rd Avenue West from 8th Street West to 10th Street West
The 10th Street Bridge re-opened in December 2020, after work wrapped up on the $9.3-million replacement project. It will be dedicated in an official ceremony later this spring as Giche-name-wiikwedong Bridge, which means Great Sturgeon Bay in the Anishinaabemowin language — the name of the Owen Sound area before contact between settlers and Indigenous ancestors.
