A fatal fire in downtown Owen Sound earlier this week that claimed the life of a 61-year-old man has been deemed accidental.
Emergency services were called to a blaze in an apartment unit above the former Norma Jean’s Bistro on 8th Street East just after 1:20 a.m. early Wednesday morning.
Owen Sound Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building. City Police say emergency services personnel were notified by occupants about an unaccounted-for male resident.
Firefighters located an unresponsive male in his apartment and tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
Police have identified the victim as 61-year-old Eric Treleaven.
The Office of the Fire Marshall, the Office of the Coroner, the Owen Sound Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch and the Owen Sound Fire Department investigated the circumstances of the fire.
Police say as a result, it has been determined the cause of the fire was accidental.
Victim Services Grey Bruce Perth and the Canadian Red Cross continue to assist those displaced by the fire.
