An environmental charity plans to install 18 trash-trapping devices in Georgian Bay to collect plastics and other debris and also to provide data on how much stuff is flowing into the water.
Georgian Bay Forever is looking for volunteers to be citizen scientists to help analyze what the trash-traps collect. They’re also looking for municipal partners willing to install stationary surface water vacuums and devices that capture litter from outflow pipes.
The group is calling the campaign “Diversion 2.0.” A news release says it’s being funded by the federal government, the Weston Family Foundation and other concerned supporters.
Georgian Bay Forever expects the traps will fill up with bits of foam from floating docks, cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, bottles and caps and other plastic bits of all sizes.
