The province’s Special Investigations Unit has terminated a probe into an arrest by Hanover Police in October 2020.
According to the SIU, a 42-year-old man was arrested without incident by Hanover Police on the evening of Oct. 18 at the Travellers Inn in Hanover.
The SIU says the man was brought to the police station and placed in a cell. The following day while being fingerprinted he complained of soreness to his “left little finger” and was taken to hospital.
The man was diagnosed with a fractured left finger.
In a release, SIU Director Joseph Martino says the evidence indicates the man’s injury was sustained days before his arrest by police, and as such, it is clear that none of the police officers who had dealings with the man caused or contributed to his injury.
“Accordingly, the investigation is hereby discontinued and the file is closed,” Martino says.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials including police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
