Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
The world of Lacrosse has produced all kinds of stories in recent days.
As we mentioned yesterday, the big story was the shift of the Brampton Excelsiors Major franchise to Owen Sound for the ” next ” lacrosse season…..
Meanwhile, in Senior Lacrosse, the upcoming season will feature a new entry as the Clearview Crushers will be based out of the Stayner Memorial Arena and I assume would form an instant rivalry with the Owen Sound Bug Juice Senior NorthStars.
Of note, an expansion bid by Fort Erie was turned down but encouraged to continue building while another expansion bid is expected from Southwestern Ontario for 2022.
Moving on, Senior and Major Lacrosse in Ontario are keeping a wary eye on the National Lacrosse League. The NLL plans to open next season in April which, if it comes to pass, will obviously impact the rosters of a number of teams at both levels.
Also, as we mentioned 2 days ago, the motion to expand the age bracket in Junior Lacrosse to 22 was denied at the Ontario Lacrosse Annual General Meeting.
And in the world of field lacrosse, the Owen Sound Lady NorthStars program announced that Francesca Alpajaro signed her letter of intent to attend Georgetown University in Washington, DC and play field for the Lady Hoyas.
Alpajaro, a resident of Saugeen Shores who attends St Mary’s High School in Owen Sound, is a defender in the sport who caught Georgetown’s eye while playing for Team Ontario.
This is a very rare accomplishment and opportunity.
It’s believed she’s the first Lady NorthStar to get a scholarship from a Division 1 NCAA School.
And truthfully, it’s hard to determine what’s more exciting for Francesca Alpajaro; playing field for the Hoyas or the exceptional opportunity to pursue an academic path that she hopes will lead to a career in medicine.
