Bruce Power says it’s making a $1 million commitment to a “double-down effort in Grey, Bruce and Huron counties,” to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The nuclear operator is launching the “Be a Light: Beating COVID-19 Together” campaign.
A release says the company will work with public health, county and municipal governments, chambers of commerce, hospitals, local MPs and MPPs, and community organizations to redouble efforts to battle the pandemic.
Bruce Power says it sees Ontario as being at a “critical juncture in the pandemic,” noting that while there has been significant progress in testing, controls, availability of PPE, reopening of the economy and work on vaccines, they say there needs to be a collective commitment to taking precautions against the virus.
Bruce Power says its ‘Be A Light’ efforts will focus on the following five areas:
1. Public Awareness through the use of local media and social media to spread the messaging coming from public health officials. This is something the company says is especially important moving into colder weather and the holiday season
2. Providing Protection by working with the community to place temperature monitoring and other technology, along with personal protective equipment in higher risk or traffic areas;
3. Advocating for shopping locally and putting another $50,000 into its Grey-Bruce-Huron Strong platform
4. Supporting community organizations which promote mental and physical health activities and programs
5. Helping to support food banks, long-term care homes and community organizations. Bruce Power says in this context, it will will direct all funds in association with ‘Buy Local.’
The company says in the coming days, it will announce more details about its five focus areas and the specific actions it plans to take.
Executive VP of Corporate Affairs and Operational Services, James Scongack says, “By working together as a community, we’ve all done many amazing things throughout Bruce, Grey and Huron counties to keep our communities safe since the start of the pandemic and we now need to double down.”
He adds, “We are contributing to this in a positive way as everyone can make a difference, and this $1 million campaign recognizes the broader and long-term challenges we face at this critical time.”
