Grey County council has approved a plan to apply for grant dollars to fund the construction of a roundabout at an accident prone intersection near Hanover.
Council approved a staff recommendation at its meeting Thursday to submit an application the the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Rural and Northern Communities Funding Stream for the $1.94-million project at Grey Road 3 and Grey Road 4.
According to a report by Grey County Director of Transportation Services Pat Hoy the intersection at Grey 3 and Grey Road 4 has the highest accident history in the county.
Hoy's report explains data from the West Grey Police Service shows there have been 31 accidents within 500 metres of the intersection since 2015.
The intersection currently only has stop signs on the north-south route, Grey Road 3, while traffic on Grey Road 4 passes through uncontrolled.
“Being the most dangerous intersection in Grey County, it was certainly on our radar,” says Grey County Warden Selwyn Hicks. “It's something we had within our 10-year plan. But, with this proposed grant we'll be able to move up (the timeline) significantly.”
If approved, the grant would cover just over $1.5-million of the project cost leaving the county responsible for funding $423,394.
The county will learn this summer if the project receives approval for grant funding.
Construction on the roundabout is planned to begin in 2022.
