Big Brothers Big Sisters Owen Sound is changing its name and expanding its service beyond the scenic city.
Local chapter vice president Lloyd Mohr says over the past few years, they've been getting numerous calls and inquiries about the possibility of extending services to surrounding communities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters develops and implements a wide range of group, in-school and one-on-one mentoring programs.
Mohr says it began when they started advertising more about themselves and what they do, “Word got out, and all of a sudden we're getting calls from Tobermory, from Tiverton from all over the place, people were interested in becoming Big Brothers or Big Sisters.”
Mohr says they've been successful in recruiting volunteers to help provide Big Brother Big Sister services in both Wiarton and Markdale. He says overall, they have over 80 volunteers.
They've also recently taken on Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in Meaford.
President of Big Brothers Big Sisters Owen Sound, Andy McKee says “Essentially, we grow as our volunteer base grows and we hope to continue expanding our volunteer base.”
Meanwhile local Executive Director Jennifer Miller, says “In our area there are so many kids who could benefit from having a mentor. Volunteering for only one hour a week can truly change the course of a young life”
People can get involved in the program by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, volunteering for in-school mentoring, joining their Board of Directors, helping out at events, registering a team for our annual Bowl for Kids or Golf for Kids fundraisers or by simply donating to support program delivery.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada is working on their new logo, website, etc.
