Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Small With Big Aspirations

By Fred Wallace

Whenever you talk about us, whether you talk about 560 CFOS, whether you talk about the Owen Sound Attack, or whether you talk about the city of Owen Sound, or Grey-Bruce in general, you have to remember one important descriptive label about it all; we're small.

Not short in stature, but rather short in numbers.

I see it year after year in my travels around the Ontario Hockey League, my broadcast colleagues do one of two things.

The goofs look down their noses at tiny Owen Sound with derision, mocking the events and promotions that we conduct, deeming them to be minor league at best.

The brighter lights in the group generally marvel at what Owen Sound can accomplish with a relatively small core of workers and supporters.

But being small, doesn't mean you lack big aspirations.

The radio station, the Attack, the city and the region at large have staged big events and I think it's fair to say we all believe the potential is there for more.

Let's take curling.

The Ontario Men's Championship, the Tankard, has been here on 2 occasions; 1991 and again in 2004.

Sometime after 2004, the Ontario Curling Championships have become a combined affair with both the Tankard & the Scotties Tournament of Hearts generally held in one centre, like Cornwall last week.

Could Owen Sound not host this ?

Is it feasible ?

And is there a desire on the part of an erstwhile Host Committee ?

If there is, I don't hear it. Not these days.

And how about " Hockey Day in Canada " being conducted this weekend in Yellowknife ?

An annual event in a Canadian city that's celebrating it's 20th year of celebrating all aspects of hockey in our country this weekend, spotlight Yellowknife this year and 19 other communities through the years.

Why not Owen Sound for " Hockey Day " ?

Could Owen Sound successfully host such an event ?

Is it feasible ?

Are we too small ?

.....Things to think about this weekend.
