Bench Talk / Off The Wire

The Christmas Spirit

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Truthfully, you get to this day, at this time of the year, and talking about sports is so secondary to the many events that make this season special.

I could give you my expert opinion on any sporting aspect, pro or local, but on the day before Christmas, it seems inconsequential.

Instead, today we'll focus on what makes Christmas good.

I had a nice chat late last week with Derek Skene of Fox Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Owen Sound.

Like many community minded businesses in the city & region, they sponsor local teams including the Owen Sound Ice Hawk Atom Girls squad.

In a neat connection between team and sponsor both the dealership and the Ice Hawks conducted a food drive.

Food was collected during two Ice Hawk Tournaments at the Julie McArthur Rec Centre plus in the showroom.

The result was staggering.

Over the course of 2 tournaments and two weeks almost 700 pounds of food was gathered and stuffed into a Fox Truck.

Plus, cash donations were in the neighbourhood of $ 500

And when the food and the cash were packaged together, they were gratefully received by the Salvation Army in Owen Sound who have a reputation of making a little go a long way at this time of the year.

There's hundreds of stories, publicized and anonymous, of Christmas Charity in our region and the Fox Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram Ice Hawks contribution to Christmas 2019 is an excellent example.

Merry Christmas.

I'm Fred Wallace
