Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are going back in time in 2 weeks time when they host the Elora Rocks in WOAA Senior Hockey action.
The Winterhawks will pay tribute to the Port Elgin Bears during their game December 28th by wearing throwback gold & black jerseys- the colors of the Bears.
The Port Elgin Bears competed in the old Central Jr. C Hockey League and later in the Grey-Bruce Jr. C Hockey League from 1976 until 1989.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 1979-80 Bears team that won the Central Jr. C championship and the understanding is that a large number of alumni will be in attendance for the game, including members of that 1980 championship team, who will be recognized during a pre-game ceremony.
Over almost a decade & a half, the Bears were a successful & competitive junior program, highlighted by having two players advance to the National Hockey League.
Paul MacDermid played for the Bears in 1979/80 before going on to play almost 700 NHL games. Forty years later, MacDermid is part of the ownership group of the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League.
Later, Louie DeBrusk was a Bear in 1986/87, departing for Stratford & London in higher junior loops before a 400 game NHL career. Of course, DeBrusk is still visible on NHL TV broadcasts while his son, Jake is a Boston Bruin.
The jerseys worn by the Winterhawks players on December 28th will be sold through silent auction during the course of the game, with select jerseys to be auctioned live at the conclusion of the game with proceeds going to charity.
Paul MacDermid, Louie DeBrusk and the Port Elgin Bears played at the old Port Elgin Arena at Bricker & Green Street.
On December 28th, the Bears will be saluted at the relatively new Plex in Port Elgin when the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks host Elora.
