Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Downtown Detroit

Fred

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Owen Sound Attack lost 3 one-goal games last weekend; losing 5-4 at Saginaw on Thursday, 5-4 Saturday at Flint & then 4-3 in overtime at Windsor.

In between, the club had an off day on Friday and with the whole day to myself in a major Canadian market with a metropolitan American market just across the river, I had all kinds of options.

Not only did I have options, I also had access to the passenger seat in my good friend Manny Paiva's SUV.

Giving the driver the final call, we crossed the border Friday night and went to Little Caesars Arena to watch the NBA Detroit Pistons meet the Atlanta Hawks.

First of all, downtown Detroit is not the same downtown Detroit I knew, even 20 years ago. It's bright, it's vibrant, there's business and commerce taking place and on the night we ventured on Woodward Avenue there was a Christmas Festival with all kinds of families and youngsters congregating where once it was barren.

Maybe the Christmas festival cut into the Pistons crowd as the announced attendance was 12,000. Or maybe the appeal of two 4 & 10 teams wasn't that high.

Regardless, Little Caesars Arena is very nice, easy to get around, comfortable and has no shortage of outlets for the consumer.

Historically, this was just my second NBA game- I saw the Raptors season finale in their inaugural year, April of 1996

I didn't particularly enjoy the SkyDome Game almost a quarter of a century ago in Toronto, but our night at Little Caesars on Friday was enjoyable on every level.

The Pistons won, Vince Carter lost, Blake Griffin was terrific, and the entertainment on the court during the timeouts was captivating.

There's probably better days ahead for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA, but Friday was pretty good night at Little Caesars.

I'm Fred Wallace
