The Quarter Pole

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Owen Sound Attack have concluded the first quarter of the Ontario Hockey League season with a record of 10-5-1 & 1, good for 5th place in the Western Conference as they prepare for their final trip to Barrie tonight to meet the Colts.

Owen Sound's start, if you will, has been fairly impressive.

Most impressive to me is that in the tightly compact Western Conference, the Attack have held their own over 12 games against Conference foes, plus 2 more against Barrie, who may as well be in the Western Conference as the Attack have 6 meetings every year with the Colts.

Also along that line, while Owen Sound hasn't played a lot of road games, just 6, they've all been divisional in nature ( including the 2 at Barrie ). Road games at Kitchener, at London, at Guelph, at Erie and at Barrie go a long way in determining where the Attack finish on an annual basis, and the games tonight at Barrie, and tomorrow at Guelph, conclude an opening stretch of 8 key road games against key rivals.

I fully understand there's a lot of hockey to be played and a lot of things can happen...and will happen, in the OHL, but at this moment in time, the Attack are in a decent position.

Looking at the standings and looking at the lengthy list of 51 games ahead, as we speak today, Owen Sound has 18 games, about 1/3rd of their remaining season against teams that currently have more points than them. Or if you choose, 2/3rds of the remaining games for Owen Sound are against teams who have generated less points.

I also understand a race is seldom won at the quarter pole, but Owen Sound's start to the OHL season has been better than expected, certainly in my view, and as the second quarter of their season commences tonight at Barrie, it will be interesting to see if the Attack continue to build on their first quarter accomplishments.

I'm Fred Wallace
