Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Matthew Weiler of Hepworth & Owen Rahn from Durham are forwards with the defending PJHL Pollock Division Champion Mount Forest Patriots.
However, their hockey season will be interrupted briefly early next month when they head to Guatemala City to play for Softball Canada.
Rahn & Weiler are among 15 players who will represent Canada at the 2019 WBSC Americas Under 17 Men’s Softball Qualifier
The Guatemala Tournament runs from November 1st-10th with the top 4 teams from that event qualifying for the 2020 WBSC Softball U18 Men’s Softball World Cup that will take place from February 22 until March 1 in Palmerston.........., that's Palmerston, New Zealand.
The Canadian entry with Weiler & Rahn will be looking to upgrade the 4th place finish at the previous Junior Men’s World Championship which was held in 2018 at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
While the World Under 17 Fastball Tournament is a month away, the weekend ahead is busy, certainly for Weiler with the Patriots at Walkerton tomorrow night and home to Wingham on Saturday night.
On Sunday, Weiler and his family are hosting a fund raising barbeque.
Obviously a junket to Guatemala, a trip the parents I understand are making as well, is expensive. And while Softball Canada is a National body and will assist in some funding, let's put it this way- they don't have the budget Hockey Canada does, thus the need for the Weiler's fundraiser on Sunday.
For more information on the fundraising barbeque for Matthew Weiler, text 519-376-4679 for more details.
