Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
I spent most of the weekend watching the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Under 23 Men's Fastball Elimination Tournament at the refurbished Duncan McLellan Park.
The next phase for the Ontario entries who qualified is the Softball Canada Under 23 Championships at Saskatoon.
The Owen Sound Junior Selects will be among the teams competing in Saskatchewan as they try and defend the title they captured last year at Saint-Léonard-d'Aston, Quebec.
However, the Selects won't be the only team from this region in Saskatoon at the end of this month.
In a scenario that seems unique to me, Saskatoon is the host centre for the Under 23, the Under 16 AND the Under 14 National Championships.
The Under 14 event begins July 27th.
The Under 23 tournament begins July 30th.
And the Under 16 competition commences the following day, July 31st.
That's a lot of fastball in one city which I think is an excellent celebration of the sport. ( Could Owen Sound ever do such a thing ? )
As mentioned the Junior Selects won't be the only team from our region at the event; the Chatsworth-West Grey Dodgers have also qualified for the Under 14 Softball Canada Championship.
The Dodgers will play 7 round robin games and then hopefully advance into the playoff round and be just a shade better than they were at the Provincial Qualifier at Napanee where they lost the final & finished 2nd to the host entry.
Of course we remind fastball fans, once Saskatoon has finished with the Under 14, the Under 16 and the Under 23 Championships, they will bring their Under 19 Championship to Duncan McLellan Park in Owen Sound August 6th-11th.
